There are a couple of things that I like about the look from Mara Hoffman's Fall 2011 showcase - 1) the use of turbans and 2) bustiers making a comeback. This look reminds me of the Borough Vintage styling for the United Way Fashion Show.

On October 22, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will hold an auction of select pieces of the historic couture and clothing collection from the Ebony Fashion Fair show. This collection was assembled over the course of fifty years by Eunice W. Johnson. Each item from the Ebony Fashion Fair Show, the world’s largest traveling fashion show, which raised more than $55 million for black charitable causes, was hand selected by Mrs. Johnson. Mrs. Johnson traveled to the world’s fashion capitals to find the most avant-garde designs to bring high fashion to black American women throughout the country.

The 707 lot auction includes items from Chanel, Dior, Halston, Bill Blass, Givenchy, Valentino, Vivienne Westwood and countless others. A capsule collection from Eunice Johnson’s personal archive will also be offered for sale. A tag sale will be held online at http://www.lesliehindman.com, from September 30- October 14, and at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Chicago which will give buyers the opportunity to own a piece of the historic collection in keeping with Mrs. Johnson’s vision that high style belonged in the everyday lives of all women.

Behind the Scenes: Inspire Fashion Show 2011

Borough Vintage is ready to send our high fashion looks down the runway at the 2nd annual INSPIRE: A Fusion of Fashion and Culture. The show will take place on Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, at 7 p.m.in the Chase Park Plaza Hotel’s Khorassan Ballroom. The event is sponsored by Monsanto Company and supported by the United Way’s Multicultural Leadership Society and Brown Shoe Company.

All proceeds from the event benefit the United Way of Greater St. Louis. INSPIRE sold out last year with more than 500 people in attendance, and this year more than 700 people are expected to attend; so get your tickets early! Tickets may be purchased on the United Way website.

I'm anticipating the renewed interest in the 1970s this fall. Not the bell bottomed, polyester shirt seventies that most people would conjure in their minds. I'm talking about the luxe, steamlined 70s with tactile fabrics such as: cashmere, wool, and silk. The New York Times has a great slideshow - highlighting the Fall 2011 runway hits. I think that the Gucci show captured the sophisticated side of the 1970s best.

Borough Vintage is seeking two interns for the Spring/Summer season. We work very hands on with our interns to train them on design history, visual merchandising, and e-commerce. If you, or someone you know, is looking for an opportunity to work behind the scenes at a boutique - please contact us!

1) Fashion Merchandising Intern Duties
- Organize all incoming stock
- Accurately measure and catalog each item
- Notate all historical/designer information
- Prepare garment for sales floor
- Create visual merchandising displays
- Participate in Special Events - fashion shows, product shoots

2) Online Marketing Intern Duties
- Ensures that web presence matches in-store direction
- Provides a cohesive customer experience between web and brick&mortar store
- Reinforces the company's quality, detail oriented image
- Maintains Website, Facebook, and Blog
- Familiar with E-commerce and Social networking
- Willing to learn Digital Photography

Hours: Approximately 10-15 hours per week.

Over the years I have gained a deep appreciation for true craftsmen. In an age of multi-tasking and jack of all trades mentality, it is refreshing to find someone who has wholeheartedly dedicated themselves to a singular mission and material. Carlos Falchi is one such craftsman who started working with leather and exotic skins in the 1970s and continues today in stores such as: Bergdorf' Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Falchi's bags often use skins such as python, alligator and ostrich and are soft and unstructured. We currently have a few examples of his iconic Buffalo bag (originally designed in 1974 and re-issued in the 1980's) in the store:

Look for the February issue of St. Louis magazine. There is a wonderful article on second hand shopping featuring Borough Vintage, Women's Closet Exchange, and Rung. Fashion editor, Nicole Benoist Edgerton does a wonderful job of explaining the difference between vintage and secondhand resale shops:

"Before setting foot in such stores, one should note a key distinction: While all vintage is secondhand, not all secondhand is vintage. (A good rule of thumb is that vintage is at least 25 years old.)"

Anyone who knows me, knows that I don't understand "comfort" as a style choice. When I ask people what kind of look they are trying to achieve, and the reply comes back "Oh, I wear anything that's comfortable" - I automatically wonder what that means. To me, by default, you should only buy a) clothing that you are comfortable wearing and b) clothing that is comfortable in terms of fit. So, here are my choices for a "comfortable" outfit.
